  • Children's FLYP Event: Underwater Archaeology

    Thursday, July 18 @ 3pm
This program uses the book, Shipwreck: Fast Forward, to explore how underwater sites form and the excavation processes used to retrieve information about them. Kids can try their hand at using Cartesian coordinates by playing an adapted version of Battleship to “map” each other’s shipwrecks. They'll also get to map a real, 100-year-old anchor. Presented by the Florida Public Archaeology Network, which is dedicated to the protection of cultural resources, both on land and underwater, and to involving the public in the study of their past. This program is sponsored in partnership with the Friends of the Library of St. Johns County.

  • Hastings Book Club: The Year of Detective Fiction

    Thursday, July 18 @ 10am

Edgar Allan Poe Book CoverArthur Conan Doyle introduces Sherlock Holmes, the "greatest detective of all time," in A Study in Scarlett (1887). Although it is said that "Holmes possessed a singular style unlike any detective seen before," book club readers will note the startling similarity between Holmes and Poe's detective Auguste Dupin (Murders in the Rue Morgue, 1841). The genius of Conan Doyle was reflected in Holmes' formidable intelligence, turning crime solving into a science. His ever-reliable sidekick, Dr. Watson, brought the intimidating deductive powers of Holmes back down to earth with the soothing voice of reason. Do you agree? Let's discuss.
