12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northrup. Read and discuss the book that inspired the movie! First published in 1853, the memoir was reprinted several times in the 19th century. An annotated 1968 version quietly drew attention and since 1999, Saratoga Springs, NY has celebrated an annual Solomon Northrup Day. Adapted and produced by Steve McQueen in 2013, the film won both the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Picture of the Year, as well as countless other awards for acting, writing and directing.
