What haunts you when you lie in bed at night? For thirteen-year-old Conor, fear comes in the form of dread about the illness of his mother. It also comes in the very real form of an ancient monster outside his bedroom window. A Monster Calls is both a fantasy story and a darkly funny, moving narrative. Join us for relaxed discussion and snacks. New members are always welcome!

Hastings Book Club: The Year of Detective Fiction
Thursday, July 18 @ 10 am
Arthur Conan Doyle introduces Sherlock Holmes, the "greatest detective of all time" in A Study in Scarlett (1887). Although it is said that "Holmes possessed a singular style unlike any detective seen before," book club readers will note the startling similarity between Holmes and Poe's detective Auguste Dupin (Murders in the Rue Morgue, 1841). The genius of Conan Doyle was reflected in Holmes' formidable intelligence, turning crime solving into a science. His ever-reliable sidekick, Dr. Watson, brought the intimidating deductive powers of Holmes back deown to earth with the soothing voice of reason.
