Literary Lions Book Club: A Good American

A Good AmericanSaturday, July 11 @ 10:30 am

This month's book club title is A Good American by Alex George. This is the story of the Meisenheimer family, told by James, a third-generation American living in Beatrice, Missouri. It’s where his German grandparents—Frederick and Jette—found themselves after journeying across the turbulent Atlantic, fording the flood-swollen Mississippi, and being brought to a sudden halt by the broken water of the pregnant Jette. A Good American tells of Jette’s dogged determination to feed a town sauerkraut and soul food; the loves and losses of her children, Joseph and Rosa; and the precocious voices of James and his brothers, sometimes raised in discord…sometimes in perfect harmony.  But above all, A Good American is about the music in Frederick’s heart, a song that began as an aria, was jazzed by ragtime, and became an anthem of love for his adopted country that the family still hears to this day. For more information, please contact Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine president Toni Siriani.

Literary Lions Book Club: The Glassblower

Friends of the Main Library St. AugustineSaturday, June 13 @ 10:30 am

June's book club title is The Glassblower by Petra Durst-Benning. Contact Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine president, Toni Siriani, for a copy of the book. In the village of Lauscha in Germany, things have been done the same way for centuries. The men blow the glass, and the women decorate and pack it. But when Joost Steinmann passes away unexpectedly one September night, his three daughters must learn to fend for themselves. While feisty Johanna takes a practical approach to looking for work, Ruth follows her heart, aiming to catch the eye of a handsome young villager. But it is dreamy, quiet Marie who has always been the most captivated by the magic—and sparkling possibilities—of the craft of glassblowing.
