From the moment she's struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for greatness. On the windswept, fossil-strewn beaches of the English coast, she learns that she has "the eye"--and finds what no one else can see. When Mary uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to vicious gossip, and the scientific world alight. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is barred from the academic community; as a young woman with unusual interests she is suspected of sinful behavior. And when she falls in love, it is with an impossible man. Luckily, Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly Elizabeth Philpot, a recent exile from London, who also loves scouring the beaches. Their relationship strikes a delicate balance between fierce loyalty, mutual appreciation, and barely suppressed envy. Ultimately, in the struggle to be recognized in the wider world, Mary and Elizabeth discover that friendship is their greatest ally. Reserve it.

Learn about what plants are best to use in lasting flower designs and how to decorative items to add interest. Hypnosis for Relaxation

Want to get away and relax but can’t find the time? For a limited time, the Main Library will host free hypnosis sessions for relaxation and rejuvenation to prepare you for the holiday season. After attending our first session, you’ll leave feeling rested and ready to conquer the world.

Dr. Chris Beverly will explain the nature and benefits of using hypnosis for relaxation before leading participants through a guided hypnosis session. Dr. Beverly is a Certified Hypnotist and graduate of the Omni Hypnosis Center. To attend the Hypnosis for Relaxation Session, participants must be:

  • at least 18 years of age, or
  • at least 15 years of age and accompanied by a legal guardian.

Destress with Stress-Relieving Stretches

This free class emphasizes stretching, coordination of breath with movement, and attention to alignment. The class is designed to create breath awareness, enhance balance, and increase flexibility. Stretching is great for those who are experiencing joint sensitivity, or overall stiffness. Wear loose clothing, bring a towel & mat. Presented by yoga instructor, Gina Mercado.
