Florida Writers AssociationThe Florida Writers Association will not be meeting at the Main Library in February. The next meeting will be March 21st.

 

 

Family Film Series

Thursday, February 5 @ 4pm

In today's Family Feature Film, square shaped subterraneans raise an orphaned boy, who helps them fight back against an evil exterminator and make peace with the fearful residents of an upper-crust Victorian-era town known for its world-class cheeses. This new release film is rated PG. Sponsored by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. Free popcorn while it lasts.

 

Black History Month Celebration with Park Ranger Ted Johnson

Tuesday, February 3 @ 4pm

Park Ranger, Ted Johnson, from the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, will present a special 45-minute interactive living history program detailing the history of Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free black settlement in North America. Children will be able to try on colonial Spanish uniforms and handle period replicas that vividly illustrate the lives and struggles of the culturally diverse Mose settlers and their commitment to protecting their families, community, beliefs, country, and above all, their freedom.

The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free, one-on-one counseling to help individuals prepare basic tax forms, including the 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and other standard schedules. Counseling is available to all low-to-middle income taxpayers, regardless of age. No advance registration is needed, people will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Individuals must bring a photo ID, last year's tax return, and all relevant tax information with them.

St. Johns Reads Event: End of the Line

End of the LineWednesday, February 4 @ 2pm

The 1935 Labor Day hurricane destroyed an automobile highway being built by Bonus Army vets alongside the path originally blazed by Henry Flagler. Over 200 WWI vets on the project were killed. Join us as we examine evidence left by some of these veterans and learn how you can use similar records to research your ancestors from this time period.

J.A.A.M. (Japanese Anime At Main)

Do you love watching anime or reading manga? Tweens, teens, and young twenty-somethings are invited to the monthly meeting of our anime club, where you can meet others with similar interests. Feel free to wear a costume if you’d like and come "JAAM" with us. Refreshments provided by the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine.

 

St. Johns Reads Event: Thomas Neil Knowles

Wednesday, February 11 @ 1pm

St. Johns ReadsAuthor of Category 5 and historian, Thomas Neil Knowles, will examine the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, which caused the death of more than 400 people in the Keys alone and destroyed the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension. Knowles will describe what daily life was like on the Keys and why so many Americans perished in the storm.
