Nature Detective Workshops: Dragonflies & Hummingbirds

Do you love bugs? Children grades k-7 are invited to become a true Nature Hero and learn all about dragonflies and hummingbirds, two amazing pollinators, with the Sisterhood of the Traveling Plants! These fun, educational workshops are hands-on with take-home gardening goodies for you, ending with a craft.  The second workshop is a repeat of the first. These workshops are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Anastasia Island Branch Library and the Garden Club of St. Augustine. RELAX with Singing Bowls

Crystal Singing Bowl Resonance is a powerful healing tool that gently promotes health and balance in one’s life. When played, they produce beautiful waves of healing sound and vibration known as resonance; listeners experience an increased sense of peace, harmony and vitality within their mind, body, & spirit, which can result in lower blood pressure, immune system stimulation, reduction of stress hormones, and increased endorphins. No experience required: expect to feel relaxed, rejuvenated and inspired! During the session participants may rest in savasana or sit; please bring a yoga mat or folded towel for your comfort. A brief introduction to the seven major chakras will be provided and then the Crystal Singing Bowls will be rung, each bowl is specifically tuned to balance and energize each chakra. This month we will feature a documentary on Highclere Castle, the place that inspired the BBC series Downton Abbey, shot on location at the Castle. Reality is even more impressive than the fictitious show, as the lord who married a rich wife to avoid bankruptcy also funded the archaeological dig which unearthed Tutankhamun's fabulous treasure.  After, we will be showing the pilot for BBC's acclaimed series, Downton Abbey.  Light snacks will be provided by the Friends of the Anastasia Island Branch Library.

Join authors Lauren Makarov and Katelin Maloney to learn how to express your feelings and find your voice through writing poetry and short stories. Lauren is the author of Reflecting on Domestic Violence. She has counseled domestic violence survivors and used poetry in therapy. Katelin is the author of the novel Drowning and blogs about domestic violence issues. Although both authors are domestic violence advocates, the focus is healing through words and this workshop is meant for everyone. No writing experience necessary. Invention of Wings

The story follows Hetty 'Handful' Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid. "The Invention of Wings" follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist and, importantly, an abolitionist), Kidd allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined.
