Join us for an exciting Viva 500 event, and kick off a summer of reading with the Spud Sisters! Join us for a fun-filled show including stories, songs, and audience participation! All of our FLYP events this summer will have a Florida flavor in honor Viva Florida 500. Please note: This event will take place in the Hastings Recreation Center gym located at 400 E. Harris Street. Please ensure all guests wear rubber-soled shoes.

Hastings Book Club

Woman ReadingThe Hastings Book Club progresses through the history of detective fiction by reading a book written by one of three masters of the genre from the mid-nineteenth century: Wilke Collins (The Woman in White and Moonstone); Victor Hugo (Les Miserables); or Charles Dickens (The Mystery of Erin Drood). We will discuss the development of the fictional detectives since its introduction by American story writer Edgar Allen Poe.

In this hands-on program, children will learn about tools and uses of fire in by the Timucuans, a Native American tribe who lived in the Northeast and North Central Florida. All of our FLYP events this summer will have a Florida flavor in honor of Viva Florida 500. Please note: This event will take place in the Hastings Recreation Center gym located at 400 E. Pre-Registration: Nature Detective Workshop

July 1 @ 10 am

book cover "Those Lively Lizards"Pre-register for our Nature Detective Workshops (formerly titled Fun with Flowers...for KIDS!), held Thursday, July 25 at 1pm by calling the Library at 827-6970 or stopping by the Hastings Branch Library. Children ages 6-12 are invited to become Nature Detectives and learn all about lizards and how these pollinators relate to gardening at these hands-on workshops. Every child will receive free gardening goodies, including Nature Detective notebooks, and have fun learning all about our wonderful Florida lizards and how spot to them. These workshops are designed by the Sisterhood of the Traveling Plants, presented by the Garden Circles, and generously sponsored by the Garden Club of St. Augustine and the Friends of the Hastings Branch Library. These workshops celebrate Viva Florida 500!

Hastings Book Club: The Year of Detective Fiction

Thursday, July 18 @ 10 am

Arthur Conan Doyle introduces Sherlock Holmes, the "greatest detective of all time" in A Study in Scarlett (1887). Although it is said that "Holmes possessed a singular style unlike any detective seen before," book club readers will note the startling similarity between Holmes and Poe's detective Auguste Dupin (Murders in the Rue Morgue, 1841). The genius of Conan Doyle was reflected in Holmes' formidable intelligence, turning crime solving into a science. His ever-reliable sidekick, Dr. Watson, brought the intimidating deductive powers of Holmes back deown to earth with the soothing voice of reason.

Musician Tom SantoniCome and listen to a selection of great rock 'n' roll music from the 1950's and '60's by some of its pioneers including Fats Domino, Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Florida's own Bo Diddley.  We'll learn about where the music and the term "Rock 'n' Roll" came from and why it became so popular, what instruments were used, and how the library can help you learn more about the music. All of our FLYP events this summer will celebrate some aspect of Florida in honor of Viva Florida 500. Meet your local and state firefighting heroes, and learn what they must do every day to keep us safe. Explore the vehicles and equipment of the St. Johns County Fire Rescue, and learn what you can do stay safe, too!  Also, learn what it’s like to work for the Florida Forest Service during a fire emergency.
