Nature Detective Workshops for Children

2016 Nature Detective Workshops returning this summer to a Library near you!

The St. Johns County Public Library System is proud to announce that, at a library branch near you, the ever-popular and educational Nature Detective Workshops for children ages 6 – 12 will be returning for a 10th summer, and the Nature Detectives will be studying yet another amazing pollinator:  butterflies! These STEM workshops are designed by the Sisterhood of the Traveling Plants – Cathy Snyder and Marilyn Smith, members of Las Adelfas Circle of the Garden Club of St. Augustine; generously sponsored by the Garden Club of St. Augustine and each branch library’s Friends of the Library organization; and starting this year, enthusiastically supported by St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department. These workshops, which have won State-level Garden Club awards and have also been recognized by the American Library Association, are an opportunity for children to learn all about butterflies as pollinators with hands-on activities, gardening goodies to take home, and books to checkout from the Libraries.

Space and materials are limited, so please contact the branch library whose workshop your child ages 6 – 12 is interested in attending to reserve your spot! These workshops will be presented by neighborhood Circles of the Garden Club of St. Augustine and each branch library’s Youth Services Librarian. In the instance of two workshops being held at a branch library, the second workshop is always a repeat of the first:

July 7 at 1:00 pm & 2:30 pm (repeat workshop)                             Hastings Branch Library, 827-6970

July 9 at 1:00 pm & 2:30 pm (repeat workshop)                             Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library, 827-6950

July 20 at 2:30 pm & 3:30 pm (repeat workshop)                          Anastasia Island Branch Library, 209-3730

July 22 at 10:00 am & 11:00 am (repeat workshop)                      Main Library, 827-6940

August 3 at 2:00 pm                                                                            Southeast Branch Library, 827-6900

Become a Nature Detective and learn why our pollinators and the environment are so important! This STEM programming, presented at St. Johns County Public Libraries, would not be possible without the sponsorship of the Garden Club of St. Augustine and each branch library’s Friends of the Library organization, donation of plants and other materials by businesses such as Southern Horticulture, and the support of St. Johns County’s Parks and Recreation Department. Celebrate St. Johns County Public Library System’s 2016 summer reading theme, On Your Mark, Get Set…READ, and register by calling or stopping by your local branch Library.
