Your local library can help your children avoid the “summer slide,” the loss of knowledge and academic skills that can occur over summer break. Our summer reading logs and incentive programs for kids and teens can help keep skills up. Kids who mark their reading logs can bring them to the library each week for a terrific prize. Stop by your branch to pick yours up! Teens who do summer reading can win prizes, too. We also offer engaging, fun programs and educational resources to keep your child learning. Last summer our county libraries provided over 500 active programs for children and teens, and put hundreds of reading logs in the hands of young learners. This summer’s theme is Build a Better World, so come visit us and join the fun!
Branch Highlights
Want to learn a new skill or make some cool art? You can come in for one of our arts & crafts programs to make cool stuff out of recycled materials or learn some neat gardening tricks! Not your thing? Come to one of our “Build It” LEGO challenges and see who can build the best structure. Need to relax after a long morning in summer camp? Come to one of our Cosmic Kids Yoga events!
Looking for a way to stretch your dollars and buy a whole new wardrobe for school? We will be holding our first ever Back to School Clothes Swap for youth 0-17!
• Summer reading logs for the preschool and elementary kids start June 4 and end July 22 with weekly prizes.
• We will be showing all eight Harry Potter films starting June 12 and ending August 7, all at 3pm. It will be a Magical Monday with Harry Potter film series. (no film on July 3)
• We have films for the younger kids, too, all on Tuesdays at 3pm: June 6-Moana; June 13-Trolls; June 27-Stuart Little; July 11-Frozen
• Family Storytimes every Wednesday at 10:15am may include special guests.

Teens will improve their confidence and their cursive skills in weekly classes. Registration is required for this free class, so please call 904-827-6900 to reserve a space. This semester, teens can get help with cursive and/or printing in the same class.
The course spans eight weeks, beginning April 5 and ending May 24. For more information, please contact Gwen at the Southeast Library.
Why learn cursive? Research suggests that printing letters and writing in cursive activate different parts of the brain. Learning cursive is good for children’s fine motor skills, and writing in longhand generally helps students retain more information and generate more ideas. Studies have also shown that kids who learn cursive rather than simply manuscript writing score better on reading and spelling tests, perhaps because the linked-up cursive forces writers to think of words as wholes instead of parts.
