Programs, contests and symphony discounts make “Library Card Sign-up Month” the coolest month of the year!
The St. Johns County Public Library System has a lot fun stuff happening in the month of September for Library Card Sign-up Month. From cool programs, Symphony discounts and free Hyppo pops chocolate dip, there will be many ways to celebrate your public library and the freedom to read. The American Library Association (ALA) has promoted Library Card Sign-up Month during the month of September since 1987, a time when libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
From the American Library Association:
“Society is changing in the way it consumes information. Libraries are evolving with these changes in order to serve the public and to continue to fulfill their role in leveling the playing field for all who seek information and access to technologies. Today’s public libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely on as their first or only choice for Internet access and digital content. In addition to books, magazines, DVDs, computers, games, software and other multimedia materials, libraries provide access to e-books and e-book readers. Ninety percent of libraries offer access to e-books, an increase of 14 percent from 2012. Mobile devices, including e-book readers, are available at 39 percent of libraries.”
Even if you don’t have time to visit a library location, there are a multitude of ways to enjoy your library online. With a library card, you can visit the library website and download free audio or eBooks, free streaming movies, free music, and much more. With six branch libraries, two bookmobiles, and one awesome website(sjcpls.org), it is entirely possible to use your library 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In September, we are asking you to tell us WHO is cooler than cool: Be like Joe Cool and vote for your favorite library branch in our “Cooler than Cool Contest.” From storytimes, gaming, robots, makerspaces, crafting, book clubs and hands-on tech–new and existing cardholders are invited to share why their library branch is the COOLEST branch around! Vote, and share throughout the month of September, on the library’s website or Facebook (sjcpls) and Instagram (stjohnscountylibrary) social networks. This starts September 1st and runs through the 30th.
For the second year in a row, the Jacksonville Symphony is offering a 20% discount on tickets for St. Johns County Library cardholders, starting August 29th. For the entire 2016-2017 season, the Jacksonville Symphony is offering a 20% discount that will be good for all Masterworks, Pops and Coffee concert tickets. This discount applies only to tickets purchased online. Contact your branch library for the discount code to use when purchasing your tickets.
Be cool, and stay cool, by getting a library card–only during the month of September can you get free chocolate dip from The Hyppo Cafe for signing up for a library card. Go to any branch or bookmobile to get your library card, and you will be given a ticket redeemable at The Hyppo Café, located at 1765 Tree Boulevard, just off of SR 312 across from Cobblestone Village.
If you get your new card at the Main Library, you will be entered into a drawing for a prize package that includes a literature-themed coffee mug, a gift certificate to the Columbia Restaurant, and a gift certificate for one free book in the Friends of the Library Bookstore. The Southeast Branch Library is also hosting a prize giveaway for those who sign up for a library card at that location. The drawing will happen at the end of September.
While you are at the library, check out the many public programs happening during the month of September. See you at the library!
