The Best Summer: Kids Summer Reading 2019

Print a Kids Reading Log Here
It’s The Best Summer at your library! Kids of all ages can participate all summer long at their closest library or bookmobile with classes and events to fit all interests. From science experiments to comedy shows, zoos to crafts—we’ve got you covered.

From June 3 through July 27, kids can fill out their summer reading logs and check in at their local branch for weekly rewards. Summer reading not only aids in avoiding the dreaded “summer slide” but also helps to encourage reading enjoyment and actually improve reading ability over the summer.

Our libraries would not be able to offer these amazing events without the support of our seven Friends of the Library groups. Thank you!

Join the fun and have your BEST SUMMER at the library!

Branch Highlights

Anastasia Island Branch
You can find events for everyone in your family this summer at the Anastasia Library. This summer’s theme is How to Train Your Dragon at the Anastasia Library for kids. We will be hosting a flurry of How To Train Your Dragon themed classes and events, including: How To Train Your Dragon Friday Crafts in June and July, How to Train Your Dragon Extravaganza, Kids Arts about Dragons and Vikings. We will also be having fun Wednesday afternoon events such as Mark Alan, Magician, The Most Amazing Animal Show, All About Blubber, An Afternoon with Pocahontas and more!

Like to read? Enjoy hanging out with friends and creating some art? We will have 2 Youth Book Clubs this Summer: SSYRA (Grades 3-6), and Teen (Grades 7-10) offered in June and July! Students may sign up for June or July or both months. Space is limited in the book clubs. Sign up online today, as these are our most popular programs and they fill up fast!

Have wee ones at home in need of their own classes? We have you covered with 5 weekly Little Ones classes. We offer our Toddler, Craft Time and PreK Little Ones classes on Wednesday mornings. We also offer bilingual Baby/Spanish and Toddler/Spanish classes on Friday mornings.

We will also be offering fun ways for everyone, kids through adults, to participate in our summer reading program and take home FREE books (Courtesy of the Friends of the Library).

Bartram Trail Branch
Even though the Bartram Trail Branch library is closed for fire suppression system replacement, the Youth Services team will present four special summer reading events for kids at Switzerland Community Church located at 2179 State Road 13. Please join us at 10 a.m. on the following Tuesdays: 6/11 Jiggleman; 6/25 Jacksonville Zoo to You; 7/9 Wild Wonders Animal Show with Mike Rossi; and 7/23 Magician Mark Alan.
Hastings Branch

Space: A Comedy Show That’s Out of this World will kick off summer reading and summer fun on Thursday, June 6th at 11:00 a.m. Laugh while you learn at this interactive program, which launches the summer theme of “A Universe of Stories.”

Children are invited to write and illustrate their own stories with author and artist Linda Brandt. Learn how to use storyboards to send your main character, Henry, on an expedition to the moon. Join us on Thursday, July 18 at 1:30 p.m.

The Museum of Arts & Sciences will immerse kids in the wonders of the night sky, nebulae, the galaxy, and beyond. Don’t miss the chance to step into their Portable Planetarium for this immersive, interactive experience. Please note: This program will run for several hours at the W.E. Harris Community Center at 400 E. Harris St. in Hastings on Wednesday, June 26 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Main Branch
At Main Library, Mr. Andy and Mrs. Marcia are planning for The Best Summer! This year we’ll have visits from The Jacksonville Zoo, The Florida Public Archaeology Network, Marineland, Mark Alan Magic and more! We’ll also have Robot Racing, Out of This World Space Crafting and the All You Can Eat End of Summer Ice Cream Party.  Storytimes are back too and are being held every Tuesday and Thursday from June 4th through August 1st.

Don’t forget your summer reading logs! Kids of all ages are encouraged to keep reading all summer long and earn free books. There is even a special prize cart of books for teens!

Check the Main Library events calendar for specific dates and times. All programs are sponsored by our amazing Friends of The Library. Check the Main Library events calendar for specific dates and times.

Ponte Vedra Beach Branch
Join the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library’s Children’s Summer Reading Program, “Up, Up, and Away – Read Every Day,” for children birth – age 11! For every 5 days you read or are read to, you earn a hot air balloon at the Library for our Summer Reading board to compete for your age group: 0 – 5, 6 – 8, or 9 – 11! Your first name and age go on the front, and if you add your phone number on the back, you’ll be entered into a raffle for a gift card to The Bookmark, a used bookstore.

Attending a Library program counts as a day read, so don’t miss out on our Summer Reading Programs for elementary-schoolers including DoDad’s Lab, Challenge Island – Fantastic Fiction Island, Wild Wonders Animal Presentation, and S.T.A.N.D. Against Bullying Magic Show; Classes for little ones including our Preschool Storytime Classes and “Baby and Me” Lapsit Classes; and pre-registration starting May 16 for our annual Nature Detective Workshops for Kids – featuring bats as this summer’s pollinator – for ages 6 – 12!

Beat summer slide and soar with reading at the Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library!
